A new method to quantify particulate sodium and potassium salts (nitrate, chloride, and sulfate) by thermal desorption aerosol mass spectrometry

Abstract. The reaction of sea salt (or biomass burning) particles with sulfuric acid and nitric leads to the displacement chloride relative sodium potassium). We have developed a new particle mass spectrometer quantify non-refractory refractory sulfate aerosols (referred as aerosol thermal desorption spectrometer: rTDMS). combination graphite collector carbon dioxide laser enables high temperature (blackbody equivalent radiation up 930 ?C). Ion signals originating from evolved gas molecules are detected by quadrupole spectrometer. Here we propose method concentrations nitrate (NaNO3: SN), (NaCl: SC), (Na2SO4: SS), potassium (KNO3: PN), (KCl: PC), (K2SO4: PS) using rTDMS. Laboratory experiments were performed test sensitivities rTDMS various types particles. measured ion single-component for each compound found good linearity (r2>0.8) between major loadings. also internally mixed SN + SC SS PN PC that temporal profiles at m/z 23 (Na+) 39; K+) characterized three sequential peaks associated evolution temperature. tested potential interferences in quantification under real-world conditions artificially generating “modified” mixture diluted seawater SS) solution. SS/SC ratios estimated 23, 36 (H35Cl+), 48 (SO+) agreed well those predicted solution within ?10 %. SN/SC 30 (NO+) ?15 %, whereas significantly lower than values. Based on these experimental results, applicability ambient measurements is discussed.
